On mermaids and myths!
about 1 year ago – Thu, Sep 11, 2025 at 12:56:49 PM

My trivia question/poll about mermaid mythology is over, so it's time to share the results!

If you guessed that mermaid myths are old, like in 3000 years old, you're right!

One of the earliest known 'mermaid' like creatures was Atargatis, (note the similarity to Atargarians, the name I gave my water-based shifters). Atargatis was a goddess in North Assyria. Now, if you are a fan of mythology, you know that people stole, swapped, traded and adopted gods from other pantheons.

Atargatis was also known to the Greeks as Derceto.

"Derceto was venerated in mermaid form, i.e., with "a face of a woman, and otherwise the entire body of a fish" in a shrine by Ashkelon, Syria, according to Diodorus (1st century BCE), drawing on Ctesias (5th century BCE); the attached myth explaining that Derceto transformed into a fish, after drowning herself in a nearby lake."

The legends vary, as legends do, but the gist is that Atargatis fell in love with a mortal and mortals being mortal...well, he died. She was heartbroken and through herself into the sea. Atargatis wasn't entirely human, though, and was so beautiful (ugly people never get the breaks, I guess) that the gods chose to save her, changing her so that she was part human and part fish.

Fun fact for UF lovers in the crowd: If you read Ilona Andrews, this next bit might be familiar to you... according the myths, Atargatis had a child. And that child's name...

Semiramis

I didn't pick up on that fact until I dug deeper into into mermaid lore, though, long after I'd written the first and was researching book 2.

And we blew through that goal! Let's talk stretch goals & polls!
about 1 year ago – Wed, Sep 10, 2025 at 05:25:42 PM

I meant to get this posted earlier, but it's been a chaotic couple of weeks and my brain melted.

Really. The doctor X-Rayed and confirmed it. Okay. Not really. It just feels that way.

But enough about me...let's talk stretch goals.

We broke through the first stretch goal of $2000 and we did it before I could even mention my goals.

Fortunately, it was an easy one, taking on the second most popular request from a previous poll, which was a writing playlist.

And I thought we might take a bit of time to hit goal two, but no, because you guys are awesome.

So...with no further ado...

But now you have to choose!

All backers, please vote and tell me which of the MMCs from the omnibus you'd like to see as a chibi!

It matters because a future stretch goal will be either a sticker or a bookmark based off that chibi!

Well. We're almost to 200% of our goal!

It's time to talk stretch goals.

Our first one... well, ya crashed through it. Good thing it was easy!

My writing playlist...or a sampling of it. (It's got over 100 songs, so I narrowed it down!)

Trying to post an update.

And I...can't.

Is anybody out there?

Can you hear me?

WE ARE LIVE!

Even if my update abilities are dead.

Wait... there's a sign of life.  I saved this on my phone and...I think it saved.

Let's hurry and try to sneak this in!

An Interview Between Two Very Vain Individuals

Descriptive text: Shows cartoonish images of a dragon and a mermaid, both looking at each other saying, I believe in you

Housekeeping: I don't think I'm going to be able to launch early. I'd mentioned it in several emails to contacts as Backerkit and wasn't told no, but it looks like the final plan is for this to be a group effort. So...TOMORROW! And if you're following, your secret links will still be secret tomorrow.

That done... we hit 100 followers which was a milestone!

So, you all wanted an interview...
